The unbearable lightness of traveling is a sensation that is virtually loved by everyone. The pre-traveling jitters, daydreaming of lands that need to be culturally conquered and spiritually mastered and expectations of the things to come. The travel bug is a creature that stays away from the people whose zeal for travel is dictated by someone else’s bucket lists. The zeal to Travel to Africa is a primordial calling, it is a passion.
Mystical Mayhem

Malawi is wrongly portrayed as a country troubled by the economy and politics. Malawi is a country deeply troubled by mystical mayhem. The mayhem once again is brought by the winds that blow from the west. Malawi’s nomadic nature is forced to be tied to the growing cities and the vanishing tribal patterns that ask Malawians to sleep under the stars. The gossip rounds once held in front of the mud cottages are now being replaced with gossip rounds enabled by the cellular communication. Malawi is now country on a crossroad, torn between its ancestral pride and the hunger for knowledge of the outside world. So, when you decide to Travel to Africa, be prepared to witness people who are trying to find their places under the sun, baffled by the inquisitive nature of the modern world.

The Great and Small Expectations

The great continent of Africa is now over flooded by the rivers of change. You will see these changes in the increasing number of people who seek medical help in the hospitals rather than seeking help from their tribal doctors. You will witness this change in the increasing number of electronic mail accounts, in the brick houses that smell nothing like the comforting cottages. But the one thing that has not changed a bit is the fact that you Travel to Africa to find your sacred and profane sanctuary. Do not believe the hype created by people who Travel to Africa and call it the perfect getaway. You run to Africa, you run to Malawi, but you can never run away from it.

Fast Forward to the Past

Travel to Africa, travel to Malawi not because someone told you to do so, but because your heart says you should. Rise above the expectations of giraffes, children warriors, mystical shamanism, poverty and aid seeking organizations. Rise above the reports of HIV/AIDS epidemics, the shortage of drinking water and leave a room for the actual Africa. Because in its essence, Africa is magical, vibrant and full of life. When you are preparing to Travel to Africa, do not burden your soul with the plethora of questions that arise from the trip itself. Danger lurks in the overcrowded cities we call home, danger lurks on the roads, danger lurks from the food we eat… If we tuck our heads in our soft pillows and underneath the soft lining, what we will miss is the evolvement, the evolution and the revolution of all the things we know and love.

Malawi and Africa need to be seen with the heart, because the language that is spoken here cannot be discerned with the ears only and the marvels of this heavenly place cannot be perceived with the eyes only. When you pack to go here, do not forget to pack your passport, your toothbrush and your entire soul.

For the majority of people in the west, South Africa Tourism is a synonym for traveling to the culturally diverse Republic of South Africa. However, if you are willing to enrich your cultural and travel dictionary, then you will rise above the traveling stereotypes and disregard Africa’s tourist hotspots. Instead, you should allow yourself to be greeted by the Warm Heart of Africa and experience hospitality on a whole new level. Welcome to Malawi, a country that does not allow the future to happen too fast.
A Country Just a Heartbeat Away

The Central and South African Tourism are currently playing a game, and the scores are all in favor of the South. Still, the Malawians do not seem to be phased by the circumstances, because they know that the reality can be perceived as a two-faced coin. If you think that something is bad, then it is bad. But if you think that you can never carry a load bigger than your potentials, then the destiny will make sure you never have to do that. It is simple as that.

The Central Africa Tourism in Malawi

There are 16 million reasons why you need to give Malawi a chance and look beyond the picture perfect images found on the brochures that endorse the South Africa Tourism as the unique African experience for tourists from all the corners of the world.

Pay Forward with a Smile

If you go to the city of Karonga, you will capture the essence of the word fascination for the very first time in your life. This small town has broad, avenue like roads covered in desert sand and red soil, children who run freely on the roads, offering their wide smiles, asking for nothing but a smile in return.

The next picturesque town of Mzuzu will teach you so much about the turbulent history of Malawi: the slavery, the colonialism and the vain attempts of the westerners to mold Malawi into a cacophonous hybrid of African resilience and modern political posture.
You can feel the everlasting gaze of Lake Malawi on your skin, or try to walk in the shoes of the fishermen who are trying to lure the fish into their nets with a song, just like modern-day mermaids.

Lilongwe is nothing like the big administrative cities you know. Here the people do not walk and talk like there is no tomorrow, they are not running towards the future because they know that it will come when the time is right. The vast streets are crowded with salesmen who will charm you into buying something from their stands. The handmade jewelry pieces, the souvenirs and the traditional garments are just a small part of the things you can take home with you.

Leave a Room in Your Suitcase

But the thing that must find a place in your suitcase is the unique Malawi energy that radiates from every particle on this Malawi soil. Malawi is like a perpetual cosmic energy charger that you can use every time you feel that you are stuck in the everyday gutter. So, the next time someone asks you what do you think about the common South Africa Tourism, you can say: It is nice, but I prefer the hallmark of the real Africa.

If India’s main cultural heritage is yoga, then without any doubts, Malawi’s main cultural heritage is carefreeness. When you read about the most common Malawi Facts, very seldom you will stumble upon the fact that Malawians are the friendliest people on the face of the earth. If you scrape underneath the superficial fascination that the rest of the world has with the Black Continent, you will see that the commonly presented Malawi Facts have little to do with the Malawian reality.

The districts of Malawi, with the capital Lilongwe marked in red. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Beyond the Malawi Facts and Fictions

If you Google Malawi Facts, the results you will be presented with are somewhat gloomy. You can read all about the country’s political struggles after the independence, the locals that live on the very brink of poverty, the ruthless nature of Mother Nature that either scorches the soil with its blazing sun, or washes everything with its over generous rainfalls. You can read that Malawians are social media virgins and their idea of virtual social gatherings is talking to their ancestral spirits in a tribal gathering. But beyond these pulp facts or fictions are the true Malawi Facts.

Porky (Labeotropheus fuelleborni) (Photo credit: teejaybee)

The True Malawi Facts

The fact that Malawi has very little cities is always highlighted by the western visitors, but what they fail to notice is that the locals live in close knit village communities in which sharing is not just some imaginary word, but the main ingredient for happiness. These people share together their poor material existence and very wealthy spiritual context. The Malawi Facts speak that the country is lacking educational amenities, but what they fail to unveil is the zeal for knowledge seen in the eyes of the children who do not need a state of the art school supplies to get close to the knowledge they seek. These children are not underprivileged, but quite the contrary. They are privileged because they are challenged to think outside the box, rather than learning from the flashy touchscreen school boards where everything is within reach.

Tribal Medicine

The mainstream tribal medicine practiced in Malawi is often labeled as one of the oddest of all Malawi Facts. The way that Malawi tribal doctors practice medicine hasn’t advanced in hundreds of years, but you cannot say that their methods are outdated. Even today the western doctors are trying to discover the recipes for various cures, courtesy of the Malawi tribal shamanism. But when you ask these so called doctors about the recipe, all you will get is a number of plant names and the vastest desire for the wellbeing of the person in need. Because Malawians honestly believe that every person in this world is an added treasure, and that the world’s value is diminished when this person decides to cross to the other side.

The Secret Society of Gule Wamkulu

Just like the western world has its own secret societies, Malawi also has its own: Gule Wamkulu. The identity of the members of this secretive society remains a lifetime mystery and their prime role is to banish the spirits who want to do harm by depleting the sources of energy that are found in every living being in Malawi. You will see these members along the dusty roads singing and dancing under the veil of the tribal shrouds and intimidating masks. Their primordial approach to life many times is ridiculed by the Westerners, not knowing that Gule Wamkulu ridicule the insatiable desire for more, a common trait in people today.

These Malawi Facts never make it to the front pages of the magazines and in the news, simply because people still refuse that in some part of the world there are people who can be happy and grateful every time they see a butterfly. Malawians celebrate the sunbeams, the raindrops, the wind that whirls around their mud cottages, and the fish they share with the eagles. They celebrate life in all its forms. Now, that is a Malawian Fact you probably won’t read on the cover of your favorite magazine, even though it is a sensational news without an ounce of pretentiousness.

As we have stated elsewhere on our website, we want to be your number one resource for information about Malawi, Afirica. We have compiled an enormous amount of information about this wonderful African Country and presented it in articles throughout our site. This information will tell you virtually all you want to know about Malawi including tourism, things to do and see, education in Malawi, Adoption in Malawi, and more. When we normally publish an article it is about one particular topic. This article will be much different. What we have decided to do in this article is give you a wonderful overview of one of the most beautiful countries in Africa, and perhaps even the whole world in terms of it’s natural beauty, wildlife, and people. We are calling this article “Everything You Wanted to Know About Malawi but Were afraid to Ask”. We hope you will enjoy it.

Where is Malawi Located ?

We featured an article here about the location of Malawi. Malawi is located in South Eastern Africa. It is actually a landlocked country surrounded by the countries of Zambia, Tanzania and Mozambique. It is actually fairly close to the Indian Ocean as well.

How do I get to Malawi ?

Since Malawi is Landlocked, you cannot travel there via boat. You must either take a Vehicle (Bus, car, etc) or fly. Go to: https://airmalawi.net for more information.

Do I need a visa to Visit Malawi ?

The simple answer is “It Depends”. We don’t mean to be evasive, and you can visit our home page to see more information on Entry into Malawi Africa, and when you need visas and passports.

Basically, everyone who enters the country does need a passport. Whether you need a visa or not depends on your citizenship.

What is There to see and do in Malawi ?

Can You Go On A Safari in Malawi ?

Yes, Yes, and Yes! As we cover here and here, you can go on an amazing safari in Malawi. In addition, in virtually all of the national parks, you can take a “Horseback Safari” which is an incredible way to get even closer to nature.

Can you see the “BIG 5″ in Malawi ?

Again, the answer is YES! For those of you unfamiliar with the term “BIG 5″, it refers to the Big 5 Game or animals. They include the Elephant, Lion, Rhinoceros, Cape Buffalo, and Leopard. These are the most dangerous animals that hunters encounter.

Is Tourism Big in Malawi ?

Tourism is a big part of the economy in Malawi and for good reason. The country is absolutely beautiful! It offers such a diverse range of terrain, environments, wildlife, bird species and fish that it is hard to cover it all in one article! There are thousands of species of fish in Lake Malawi alone! Much of our website is devoted to different things to see and do in Malawi and I can say without hesitation that it is an amazing country to visit and you will not be lacking in activities.

Having said that, in addition to the amazing natural beauty you will encounter, the people of Malawi are as beautiful. They are warm and friendly and love to share their traditions and stories with you. They are amazing artists as well.

Is Agriculture Big in Malawi ?

Often time when we think of Africa, we think of struggles of the people finding enough food to feed themselves. We think of the young children who are malnourished. We are happy to say that Malawi is doing well when it comes to agriculture, and that Yes, agriculture plays an important role in the economy and lives of the citizens of Malawi, Africa.

The main crops that are raised for economic reasons are Coffee, Sugar, Tea, Cotton, Nuts, and Tobacco, and have been so for 100 years or more. In terms of crops which are raised for consumption include Corn, Sweet Potatoes, bananas, rice, cattle, sheep and goats. An encouraging part of agriculture is the industry is rising at an estimated annual rate of around 10%.

We also have shared with you an interesting innovation called the “Wonder Bag“, that is helping African families eat more nutritious meals.

Why is Malawi Known For Adoptions ?

Adoption in Malawi became well known after the pop singer Madonna adopted 2 children from Malawi in 2006. It was widely covered in the press throughout the world.

For more information about Adoption in Malawi Africa Click Here.

What is education like in Malawi ?

When we look at countries around the world one of the first areas we like to exam is it’s educational system. The educational system is essential in building a strong country, and having productive citizens. It also provides a structure and framework for families, and a good environment for children during their formative years.

What is the education System Like in Malawi Africa ?

With a population of over 13 million people Malawi is a fairly good sized country. Currently the adult literacy rate is 77% for men and 67% for women.

The Malawi education system is divided into 4 segments, pre-school, primary, secondary and tertiary.

The pre-school education has been designed to establish learning and development. It is unclear exactly how much the government supports this pre-school education, as it is primarily supported by voluntary organizaions.

Primary school education runs for eight years, and is often called standard 1-8. The primary school age is 6 – 13. Students are expected to learn in three segrgated terms a year. they start in September through December, then January through April, and May trough July. Stuedents typically learn English, math, ChiChewa, socail studies and science. After 8 years they receive a certificate of learning.

Secondary education is provided by the Government and private schools. Secondary education in Malawi is never free. Students are expected to pay for tuition and books, although in many schools it is not a large sum. These schools typically run for 4 years.
